Three different chains of mountains cross Oaxaca, when they come together form rock formations such as la guacamaya waterfalls and hierve el agua
Hierve el agua
Is a natural warm spring which contains air trying to escape, hence the name "Hierve el Agua"which means “the water boils”. The water is also full of minerals, so as it runs off of the edge of the nearby cliff, calcium carbonate and magnesium in the water create a petrified waterfall, and the sulphur ads nice yellow accents in places.
La Guacamaya
Arroyo Guacamaya is one of the closest ecotourism sites to the City of Oaxaca, accessible by private vehicle in about an hour, or public transportation. La Guacamaya has most if not all of the features and attractions of the more distant ecotourism locales in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, including mountain biking, nature trails for hiking and climbing, streams and waterfalls, lodging, children's facilities, and a restaurant featuring fresh fish from the local trout farm - all within a community-managed forest promoting sustainable logging operations.
The village of La Guacamaya, while in the District of Ixtlán, is only a 45 minute car ride from Villa Etla, and thus just over an hour from the City of Oaxaca. Accordingly, while there are a number of reasonably priced overnight cabins at Arroyo Guacamaya, as a day trip from Oaxaca one can easily enjoy a great deal of what the region has to offer.La Guacamaya is 31 kilometers from the City of Oaxaca, at approximately 9,000 feet above sea level.
Tule Tree
At over 2000 years old, the 'Tule tree' (arbol del Tule) is amongst the oldest living trees in the world. With 10 meter diameter trunk it is also considered by many to be the broadest tree in the World. With the thickest trunk in the world (and DNA studies reporting that it is, in fact, one tree), the nearly 2,000 year old tree literally makes you placed it pretty high on the “Places I need to visit in this lifetime” list.
National Park "Benito Juárez"
It is situated north of the City of Oaxaca. It includes the following municipalities: San Felipe del Agua and Donaji, Oaxaca, and San Andres Huayapan of the central district. It was appointed a National Park in 1937. Due to its great diversity of vegetal and animal species, it constitutes, along with its sinuous topography, the most attractive of natural attractions. It is located only 3.1 miles (5 kilometres) north of the City of Oaxaca, and can be reached in approximately 15 minutes.
Ethno Botanical Garden
The objective of this garden is to create a collection of live plants, representatives of the rich Oaxacan biodiversity, duly identified and documented, offering the visitor an educational space, aesthetics appreciation and relaxation. An extension program teaching plant knowledge and donations of plant collections to schools, cultural centres of the city, and rural communities is being carried out. It counts with restrooms, rest areas, library and herbarium.. This place is part of a cultural centre that includes the Santo Domingo temple, in city downtown.
San Sebastián (Caves)
This is a grotto system comprised of several branches, and to date, only one of them has been explored and opened to tourists. It is a branch approximately 1,312 feet (400 metres) in length with an entrance and exit on each extreme. It has five chambers, ranging from 66 to 230 feet (20 to 70 metres) in height. In them, we can appreciate calcareous formations in the shape of human beings, animals, and common objects. In addition, it has a stream and small pools.Near the grotto mountain there is a recreational and rest area. Located 52 miles (84 kilometres) away from Oaxaca city.
Magical Lagoon of Guelatao
A lagoon measures over 328,1 feet (100 metres) in diameter. The water, according to local statements, changes from green to red, yellow, and brown, to completely murky depending on the season. Extensive grasslands and leafy trees surround it. The landscape is mountainous.Located 34 miles (55 kilometres)
away from Oaxaca city.
VILLAGES
These villages are a very special attraction specially because they are the heart of Oaxaca's artistic tradition. All of them are located around Oaxaca city, no more than 2 hours away of it.
Teotitlán del Valle: The village in which rugs are made.
Tlacolula: Oaxaca's second big town in the valley, its Sunday Market is a very rich, colourful and beautiful exhibition of oaxaca's raving gastronomy.
San Martín Tilcajete: The best artisans or alebrije makers work in this village.Alebrije is a slang term (generated from gypsy dialects) which means "a difficult tangled thing, shaped in confusing or fantastic figures". The different shapes of the branches found on treetops invite these craftsmen to fulfil their imagination, thus forming the most beautiful figures of animals such as: lions, jaguars, iguanas, dogs, snakes, birds, goats and a wide range of fantastic and imaginary characters, helping themselves only with machetes and razors.
Coyotepec & Atzompa: The home of oaxacan pottery, the well known "barro negro".
Calpulalpan de Mendez:This mining town holds the title of "Magical Town" due to its beautiful landscapes, milenary traditions, fabulous architecture.
Ocotlán de Morelos: The infamous oaxacan paintor Rodolfo Morales was born in this beautiful town, although there are not representative pieces of art per se, the town has a beautiful church and you will be inspired by the same landscapes and environment that inspired Morales through out his whole work.
